1.1 Curriculum related to English

English as a subject in KJST is under the Foreign Languages learning area of the Basic Education Core Curriculum 2008 created by the Ministry of Education of Thailand. English is the most recommended and suggested Foreign Language to be taught in school. The teaching of this subject follows the strands and learning standards set by the curriculum which determine what the students should be able to learn about the subject.

The following are the strands and learning standards for Foreign Languages cited in the Basic Education Core Curriculum 2008:

Strand 1: Language for Communication

Standards:

  • Understanding and capacity for interpreting what has been heard and read from various types of media, and ability to express opinions with proper reasoning

  • Possessing language communication skills for effective exchange of data and information; efficient expression of feelings and opinions

  • Ability to present data and information, concepts, and views on various matters by speaking and writing

Strand 2: Language and Culture

Standards:

  • Appreciating relationship between language and culture of native speakers and capacity for use of language appropriate to occasions and places

  • Appreciating similarities and differences between language and culture of native speakers and Thai speakers, and capacity for correct and appropriate use of language

Strand 3: Language and Relationship with Other Learning Areas

Standards:

  • Using foreign languages to link knowledge with other learning areas and as foundation for further development, to seek knowledge and widen one’s world view

Strand 4: Language and Relationship with Community and the World

  • Ability to use foreign languages in various situations in school, community and society

  • Using foreign languages as basic tools for further education, livelihood and exchange of learning with the world community

So as we can see, foreign languages such as English are taught to understand other people and learn their ways of living. The curriculum emphasizes the use of other languages other than Thai as a medium of reaching out to other people and as an instrument to let the learners build relationships all over the globe.

1.2 Teaching Plan related to English

Like in any other countries, KJST English teachers create a lesson plan for every lesson. This is in accordance with the subject’s syllabus which contains all the topics and indicators for one semester. The objectives of the lesson are created based from the indicators of the syllabus and the curriculum. The lesson plan outlines everything that will be done throughout the lesson starting from the target objectives, topic of the lesson, learning materials and the procedure of the lesson. The procedure of the lesson has the following parts:

  • Warm up – In this, the teacher will recall the previous topic through asking questions to students, will give a pre-discussion activity, and present vocabulary words found in the lesson.

  • Motivation – this includes another activity that is directly related to the lesson. This is done to activate the participation of students. It could be done by groups or pairs.

  • Discussion – The teacher will now present the topic and will discuss it thoroughly. The students’ role is to listen attentively.

  • Enhancement – After discussion, the teacher will give an activity to know if the students understood the lesson. The activity can be in the form of asking question and calling out students to answer or a group work where students cooperate to do the activity.

  • Wrap up – The teacher will sum up and give the generalization or summary of the lesson. He can also raise questions to the students to know what they have learned.

  • Evaluation – This is done at the end of the unit or of a set of topics. The teacher will give a worksheet that covers two or more lessons discussed.

However, not all of the abovementioned steps are followed or done. This is due to time constraints when there are class interruptions like school events, teacher’s meeting, and the like. When this happens, the teacher will skip some of the steps and just proceed directly to the discussion of the lesson.
