1.1 Procedures of Teaching

I honestly wanted to use the basic procedure that Thai teachers use but unfortunately, I couldn’t understand their prepared lesson plans because they’re written in Thai language. So, I decided to use the procedure that I was taught to use but of course, with a touch of the procedures that I have observed in my mentor.

I made a lesson plan for every topic that I was about to teach. All my lesson plans have the same procedures which are as follows:

  1. Daily Routine – I would greet the class, “Good morning” or “Good afternoon”. I would also ask them if how was their day, and the like. I used this procedure to set the mood of the class where they could feel comfortable answering my questions and wouldn’t hesitate in participating.

  2. Motivation – In here, I would recall the previous lesson by throwing questions and letting them raise their hands to say something about the last topic. I would also present some vocabulary words that they would likely encounter as the discussion progress. I would present words through individual or group activities.

  3. Introduction of the Topic/Lesson Proper – This the procedure where I reveal the main lesson of the day and discuss it with them. I also incorporated some fun activities to make the lesson more interesting and to catch the students’ attention. I usually use “Quiz Bowl” where the class is divided into several groups and they will work together to answer the questions I flashed on the projecting screen.

  4. Practice/Activity – To further know that the students understood the lesson, I would give them another individual or group activity that supplements the topic. In here, I could see what the students learned from the previous procedure. When I saw that some students didn’t get the gist of the lesson, I would somewhat explain to them in the simplest form.

  5. Synthesis – I have learned from my Professors that I shouldn’t leave the classroom without giving a generalization of the lesson to the class. In line with this, I would often ask students about the things they have learned may it either be vocabulary words, activities and the lesson. After seeking for students’ learning, I would give my own summary of the lesson. This is a way of refreshing the students’ minds of what was the topic for the day.

  6. Evaluation – This serves as my measurement of learning of the daily lessons. My evaluations are usually writing activities where students are asked to complete sentences based from what they have learned.

  7. Assignment – I have observed in KJST that teachers don’t usually give home works to students but my lesson plan in the Philippines requires me to do it. But instead of giving another activity for students to work on to, I would just remind the class to read and study the next lesson.

1.2 Time Management and Organizing Activities

Fifty minutes is allotted for every lesson. This is quite different to my home country which gives an hour to finish the lesson. It was a struggle to utilize the time given the fact that I have many steps to follow in my lesson plan. The following are my allotted time for every step I took in teaching.

However, the time allotment presented was not always followed. This was for the reason that sometimes, students needed more time doing an activity and understanding the lesson. In cases like those, I would forgo some activities and just focus on letting the students get the main point of the lesson. It was far more important for the students to master the lesson than letting them work on various activities but don’t really know its relevance to the lesson.
Speaking of activities, I had a hard time thinking of what activity can be the best for the students’ level of learning. Based from my observation, students are just usually asked by the teacher and they would answer in chorus. Group activities are hardly done. And I know I shouldn’t just stick to what’s common and usual. So I decided to do group activities that would catch the students’ attention and participation while learning at the same time. Activities are done in the Lesson Proper and Practice/Activity parts of the procedure.
Refer to my lesson plans below to see the activities.

1.3 Problem - Solving

In order to develop the higher order thinking skills of students, they must be given exercises. With this, I let students answer worksheets that contain incomplete sentences about real time scenarios and they have to provide the words that will best suit the sentences. Art of questioning was also done by letting students ponder about some thoughts and share their ideas later on. Arranging puzzles also helped them think critically to ensure that they get the best result.
These activities are done to let the students solve problems may it be in real life or just a stimulation in the classroom. And these activities are varied from one another to recognize the different multiple intelligences and learning styles of the students.

1.4 Classroom Management

I would frankly say that I had a hard time managing the classroom in terms of students’ noise and attention. The reason? Language barrier. Students don’t understand my commands and requests to keep the silence in the room. Their noise was at peak every time there’s a group activity. I was very much thankful that there was another student teacher who served as my translator inside the classroom. However, to ensure my contact with the students, I would often go around the classroom to check every group. This was also done to explain the activity better. During my discussion, I would usually call students who I assumed to be a bit sleepy or those who seemed to think far from the lesson. Calling them was a sort of warning and a way of getting back their attention. I also made sure that I warn students who speak louder than me during discussion. I would usually make the silence sign to remind them that they have to minimize their noise. And the good thing about the students was that they know how to respect the teacher. Once they noticed that I was making a sign to silence the room, they, themselves, would reprimand their classmates and would say that they should keep quiet.

The following are the simplified actions that I took to ensure classroom management:

  • Stop talking for a few seconds when the class is noisy so they would notice that I was just observing them and letting them lower their voices.

  • Making the silence sign to let them understand easier.

  • Roaming around the classroom to guarantee that everyone is doing their jobs during activities

  • Calling out the students who have other business and let them answer some of my questions.

  • Making the close fist sign as indicator that I want everyone’s attention on me.
